Dokuz Eylül University, one of Türkiye’s prestigious higher education institutions, continues its activities in line with the mission of “increasing the economic, cultural and social wealth of humanity through education and scientific research” and the vision of “shaping the future in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation; becoming an education and science center university”. Our university continues to add value to the future of our country and our scientific world with its deep-rooted history, universal education understanding, qualified academic infrastructure, the generations it has trained and the studies it has carried out.
Our institution, which is devoted to the Republic of Türkiye, which is a democratic, secular and social state of law, has been guided by the principles and reforms of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk since its establishment. In doing so, our university, which preserves science and universal values, works with the aim of bringing individuals with high national and spiritual values; free mind and conscience to society thanks to its qualified educational infrastructure. The biggest share in the rise of our institution to a privileged position and success belongs to the academic and administrative staff and students at the university.
Founded on July 20, 1982 in beautiful İzmir, Türkiye’s window to the West, with the initiatives of respected scientists of the period, our university has undergone a rapid growth process since then. Our institution, which provides superior services in the field of higher education with its physical infrastructure and qualified manpower, has pioneered the higher education and R&D activities of our country and has trained many respected names in its field.
Dokuz Eylül University, which serves at important points all around İzmir, is constantly developing its service network and increasing its current capacity by integrating with the city’s history, culture, texture and social life. As of the 2023-2024 academic year, our university continues its services on a total area of 5,534,245.86 m2 as land and land area according to the approximate ownership status in districts and regions such as Balçova, İnciraltı, Alsancak, Konak, Narlıdere, Hatay, Urla, Seferihisar, Ürkmez, Torbalı, Bergama, Selçuk and Kiraz, especially in Buca district of İzmir. Our university, which provides its students with an environment where they can benefit from the dynamic structure and opportunities of the city, also contributes to the development, culture, art and sports life of the city.
2023-2024 As of the Academic Year, a total of 69,200 students, including 5,800 international students from 106 different countries, are studying; over 2,800 academic staff and 2,750 administrative staff are working at our university.
In addition to higher education activities, our university offers many opportunities for our students, from nutrition and accommodation to health and transportation services, culture-arts-sports infrastructure and activities. Student communities for various areas of interest support the personal and social development of our students. In 2024, there are 141 active Student Societies. These societies carry out important and proud works in their fields and achieve national and international success in various competitions.
Our institution, which has carried out many firsts and exemplary studies with the aim of serving the development of our country through science and having a greater say in the international arena, has scientific working environments that will ennoble the welfare and happiness of our nation and provide added value to İzmir.
At this point, our university established Dokuz Eylül University Technology Development Zone DEPARK in 2013, an ecosystem where academic, economic and social structures are integrated, in order to develop university-industry cooperation in the fields that our city needs and to take R&D studies to the next level. With Türkiye’s first Health Specialized Technopark, DEPARK, which continues its activities in the Olive Building and Pomegranate Complex on the 15th of July Health and Arts Campus, as well as in the Alpha and Beta Buildings on the Buca Tınaztepe Campus, contributes to the development of local and national development-oriented entrepreneurship with R&D and innovation-based projects and collaborations.
The fact that our university hospital serving the Aegean Region and our related units in the field of health are located on the 15 Temmuz Health and Arts Campus has increased the strategic importance of the region in the field of health. Based on this fact, our institution, which has transformed its predictions about the future in the field of health into reality over the years, has put the Advanced Biomedical Application and R&D Center into operation, and then created the structure that has transformed into the İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Center. After a while, as a complementary element to the growth of our country in strategic areas, the International İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Institute was established in 2015 with the initiatives of the University Senate of the period. In 2021, the Oral and Dental Health Application and Research Center was established within our University and started to serve the people of the region.
Our institution, one of the largest higher education institutions of our country, has 18 Faculties including Buca Education, Maritime, Dentistry, Literature, Science, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Fine Arts, Nursing, Law, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Theology, Business, Architecture, Engineering, Necat Hepkon Sports Sciences, Medicine, Tourism and Veterinary Medicine. Our university also has 10 Institutes, 1 State Conservatory, 2 Colleges, 7 Vocational Schools, 2 Application and Research Hospitals, 42 Research and Application Centers, as well as a Technopark (Dokuz Eylül University Technopark-DEPARK), a Technology Transfer Office (Dokuz Eylül University Technology Transfer Office – DETTO) and an Incubation Center (BAMBU Acceleration and Incubation Center).
In line with its research-oriented university goal, Dokuz Eylül University, which has carried out important studies with its wide research opportunities and success in international and national projects, has been awarded the title of “Research University” in 2021. DEU, which has performed successfully with its high performance in the evaluation made by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) within the scope of 32 indicators under the titles of ‘Research Capacity’, ‘Research Quality’ and ‘Interaction and Collaboration’, has entered the top 20 among the state universities in Türkiye, which has 207 universities. In June 2022, Dokuz Eylül University was deemed worthy of the “Institutional Accreditation Certificate” within the scope of the “2021 Institutional Accreditation Program” by the Higher Education Council of Higher Education (YÖKAK).
